Geoffrey Payne: Contribution to Habitat III in Quito

 

Geoff attended Habitat III in Quito Ecuador in October at the invitation of the Network-Association of European Researchers on Urbanisation in the South (NAERUS), sponsored by Cities Alliance. In Quito, Geoff made several contributions including:

Presenting a keynote paper on ‘Increasing tenure security for community development and urban transformation’. The paper is due to be published shortly and will then be available for download.

 

Geoff was also invited by UN-Habitat to moderate a Special Session on Housing in which the speakers were:

Ms Fernanda Lonardoni, Human Settlements Officer UN-Habitat;

Ms Leilani Farha, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Housing;

Mr Sadet Naderi, the Honourable Minister of Urban Development and Housing, Afghanistan;

Ms Emmanuelle Cosse, the Honourable Minister of Housing and Sustainable Habitat, France;

Mr Michael Muller, the Mayor of Berlin, Germany;

Ms Jane Katz, the Director of International Affairs and Programs, Habitat for Humanity;

Mr Loic Chiquer, Chief Technical Specialist on Finance and Markets at the World Bank and;

Mr Umberto Iglesias, Housing Institute and government adviser, Medellin, Colombia.

The session focused on housing policy at national level and the challenges of implementation and was attended by several hundred people.

 

Thirdly, Geoff was invited by UN-Habitat to participate in a panel discussion on Housing and the New Urban Agenda. A clip of this will be available for downloading shortly.

Finally, Geoff was invited by UN-Habitat to record a UNI lecture on ‘Improving Urban Land Tenure and Property Rights’ which will also be available for downloading shortly. Watch this space!

On returning from Quito, Geof fwas invited by the RTPI (Royal Town Planning Institute) to prepare a blog on his impressions of the conference and the New Urban Agenda approved by UN member states in Quito. Click here to access the blog.
